People are admitted to burn centers and acute care hospitals for burn injuries caused by fires, scalding, and contact with hot objects, electricity, and chemicals. Burns can damage the skin and underlying tissue and rank among the most painful types of injuries a person can experience.

Types of burn injuries

Burns are classified in degrees according to their severity and how deeply they penetrate the surface of the skin.

  • First-degree burns: These are superficial injuries, affecting only the outer layer of skin (epidermis). The burn site will be red, dry, and painful. Long-term tissue damage is rare with first-degree burns.
  • Second-degree burns: Also known as partial thickness burns, these injuries affect the epidermis and part of the deeper layer of skin (dermis). Second-degree burns appear red and blistered and may be painful and swollen.
  • Third-degree burns: Full thickness or third-degree burns destroy both the epidermis and the dermis. They may also penetrate the hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue), the innermost layer of skin in the body. A third-degree burn site may appear white or charred and blackened.
  • Fourth-degree burns: These severe burn injuries extend through both layers of skin, the underlying tissue, and the deeper tissue. Fourth degree burns may penetrate to muscle and bone. As the nerve endings are destroyed, there is no pain or feeling at the burn site.

Burn injuries caused by negligence

Many people suffer severe burns through the negligence of others. Common causes include:

Motor vehicle accidents

Cars and other vehicles can catch on fire in a collision, causing serious burn injuries to drivers and passengers. There may be negligence on the part of the driver who caused the crash or the manufacturer of a defective auto part that caused the fire.

Building fires

Faulty wiring, building code violations, missing or defective smoke detectors, lack of fire extinguishers and fire alarms: these are all ways in which landlord negligence can lead to building fires and burn injuries.

Electrical burns

These injuries can be caused by defective electrical devices or appliances, even if the device is not turned on at the time. Electrical accidents can also occur because of old and faulty wiring, loose connectors, and lack of preventive devices such as ground fault circuit interrupters, three-pronged outlets, and polarized plugs.

Scalding

Hot water from the tap is a common cause of scalding injuries among young children. Water at a temperature of 140 degrees can cause third-degree burns in five seconds. A landlord who fails to take measures to prevent this may be liable for resulting burn injuries.
